Electric Breast Pumps - On Sale and Reviews

There are many reasons a woman may need to use a breast pump on a regular basis. It’s possible that the baby is unable to breast feed. Or, perhaps, you are unable to stay at home with the baby because you are the breadwinner in the house. In these cases, a pump is necessary. You can collect and store your breast milk so your baby can be fed from a bottle.

In these circumstances, you’ll need to use the pump constantly. A manual pump is impractical because it takes so much work. You may become worn out before you collect enough milk to feed your baby boy or girl for the day. It’s definitely worth it to invest in an electric breast pump.

The following are features of a typical electric breast pump:

• A quick cycling time. When a baby sucks on your breast, they use rapid and short cycles. This means they take short, fast pulls of milk. A good electric pump will mimic this cycling time, which is very important. Your breasts were designed to release milk in response to your child, so mimicking a child will ensure proper milk collection and your comfort.

• Double collection option. If you can collect milk from both breasts at once, you’ll be able to store the amount you need in less time. Most electric pumps are equipped to perform on two breasts at the same time.

• Fully automatic. Electric pumps are hands-off once you attach them to your breasts.

• Adjustable suction. For your comfort, most pumps have adjustable suction so your nipples don’t get sore.

These electric pumps come in varying sizes and prices. The most expensive ones are hospital-grade pumps. For mothers who solely pump to feed their child (i.e. no breast feeding at all), this is probably the best choice. These pumps are durable enough to last you until your child is eating solid foods. However, these pumps are also the heaviest, weighing in at up to 18 pounds, making them the least portable. Some smaller options are available. While these may require a replacement part or two during their use, they can still last a long time.

Keep in mind that hospital-grade pumps can cost over $1,000. The good news is that you can rent one instead of buying one. Check with your hospital to see if they offer this service or if they can refer you to someone who does. Fees can be as little as $1 per day. If your baby was born with a condition that makes nursing impossible, your insurance may even cover this cost.

You’ll also need accessories with your electric breast pump. You’ll need nipple flanges, which connect the pump to your breast, as well as collection vessels. These accessories are much more affordable.
